Introduction

On July 5th, Palestinians, Israelis and ISM activists proceeded from the center of Tulkarem to a toxic chemical factory at the edge of the city. The Israeli-owned factory was originally located near residences in Israel, but was deemed to be polluting beyond acceptable legal levels; so it was moved to the West Bank city of Tulkarem. The factory represents yet another dimension of occupation for the Palestinian people.

The demonstration approached the factory carrying signs shaped like gravestones proclaiming the death of the environment, justice, freedom, etc., as well as the death of organizations like World Health Organization and the International Court of Justice. Protesters also wore surgical masks to dramatize the factory's toxic output that pollutes the town on a daily basis. Arriving at the factory, the gravestones were placed outside a main gate where some of the protesters spraypainted messages on the wall of the factory and bang on the gate with stones.
